When you’re getting ready to move, one of the first things you’ll usually do is pack your belongings. From a closet full of clothes to a cupboard full of dishes, you’ll most likely need a variety of boxes. Knowing which moving boxes you need and why can make a big move much easier.
Moving boxes aren’t just one-size-fits-all boxes that you throw your stuff into and schlep across town. They come in many different sizes and are designed for many different purposes. Find out which boxes are the best fit for your situation.
What Different Types of Moving Boxes Are There?
Yup, you read that right. There’s more than one type of moving box. We’ll start by covering the three main sizes: small, medium and large.
- Small boxes typically measure between twelve and fourteen inches in length. They’re best for small but heavy items. Books, small appliances and kitchen tools are ideal for this size.
- Medium boxes are the type you’ll see most often when moving. They’re your basic, everyday box. These boxes typically measure between fourteen and eighteen inches in length and are versatile enough for a wide range of packing needs.
- Large boxes typically measure between eighteen and twenty-four inches in length. They’re best for bulky but lightweight items, such as clothes, pillows, bedding, stuffed animals and other linens.
It doesn’t stop there. There are also specialty boxes. Specialty boxes are designed for specific purposes. For example:
- Wardrobe boxes are especially tall and include an interior hanging bar that lets you hang your clothing inside, making it easier to transport without damaging or wrinkling it. Wardrobe boxes are large and may require some assistance to move but they can save you a lot of trouble when it’s time to unpack.
- Dish boxes have two main features:
- They’re made from heavy-duty cardboard that can support the weight of heavy dishes.
- They also include built-in dividers that keep dishes from touching one another. This helps prevent potential breaks and other damage.
How do you decide which boxes to get?
The boxes you choose depend on what items you have and how many you need to pack. A good rule of thumb is to have eight small boxes, five medium boxes and three large boxes for each room. Of course, this will vary from person to person, but it’s a good place to start.
